ENTERTAINMENT AND
NIGHT LIFE IN ATHENS

There are several first-class night-
clubs in Athens. During the Sum-
mer months they move to open-air
premises in the suburbs or by the
seashore. For a combination of
Greek food and gay entertainment,
the local “Tavernas” offer pictur-
esque surroundings and some-
times “Bouzouki”, the Greek pop-
ular music.

‘There are numerous open-air
theatres and movie shows, also
weekly Symphony Concerts dur-
ing the Summer months held at
the ancient Theatre of Herodos
Atticus. The Festival of Athens
presents in the Summer fine
performances of Ballet, Opera,
Theatre and Music, while at Epi-
daurus the Classical ’dramas
are enacted in their original
setting. Also during the Summer,
there are “Sound and Light” pro-
grammes on the Akropolis, and
Folk dances in Passalimani.

USEFUL INFORMATION

The popular Greek aperitif is
“Ouzo”, distilled from cruched
grape stems, and usually accom-
panied by “mezes”, or Greek
snacks.

Greek wines are of good quality,
the most popular being a resina-
ted type, the red or white “Retsi-
na”. Apart from this there is a
wide variety of high quality,
French-type white, red and rose
wines, Almost every region of
Greece produces its own variety.
Greek beer is very Iefreshing,
and is always served ice-cold.

In restaurants, cafes, bars, night-
clubs, etc., a service sur-charge is
usually included in the bill, but
it is customary to leave an addi-
tional 5-10% on the plate ’ for
the waiter, and an odd drachma
or two, per person served, on the
table for his assistant. One or
two drachmae is the usual tip
for most services.

USEFUL INFORMATION

The popular Greek aperitif is
“Ouzo”, distilled from cruched
grape stems, and usually accom-
panied by “mezes”, or Greek
snacks.

Greek wines are of good quality,
the most popular being a resina-
ted type, the red or white “Retsi-
na”. Apart from this there is a
wide variety of high quality,
French-type white, red and rose
wines, Almost every region of
Greece produces its own variety.
Greek beer is very Iefreshing,
and is always served ice-cold.

In restaurants, cafes, bars, night-
clubs, etc., a service sur-charge is
usually included in the bill, but
it is customary to leave an addi-
tional 5-10% on the plate ’ for
the waiter, and an odd drachma
or two, per person served, on the
table for his assistant. One or
two drachmae is the usual tip
for most services.
